BREAKING: Town of East Troy chairman ousted in recall election

VANESSA LENZ
East Troy Times Editor

The Town of East Troy recall election results came in late Tuesday evening and the news was not favorable for Town Chairman John Stoesser.

According to unofficial results reported by Town Clerk Kim Buchanan, challenger Joe Klarkowski defeated incumbent Stoesser for the chairman position. Klarkowski, who has served as a town supervisor for five years, garnered 578 votes to Stoesser's 360. There were four write-in votes.

Town Supervisor Clayton Montez kept his seat in the recall election.

In the race for supervisor, incumbent Montez garnered 538 votes to defeat Kim Hampel, who received 400 votes. There were two write-in votes.

Montez served as a town supervisor from 1993-96 and 2003-10 and as town chairman from 1996-2003.

Buchanan called the voter turnout for the July 27 election "amazing" with a total of 945 ballots cast. This was more than the 757 voters who headed to the polls April 6, when a majority of town residents voted against an advisory referendum, abandoning the controversial park trail.

The election will leave a vacancy on the three-member Town Board. Buchanan said the new board will fill the position by appointment.

The next meeting of the board is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 9 and Klarkowski will be sworn in at that time. He will serve the remainder of Stoesser's term, which expires in April of 2011.

Stoesser was appointed to a two-year term during his first election in April of 2009. He was recalled by Town Taxpayers for Accountable Government, a group upset over "weak leadership," "opinionated communications" and claims Stoesser "violates state statues."

At the center of the recall push for Montez was Citizens for Responsible Government. CRG has previously charged Montez with a "lack of interest in local issues such as high property assessments, jobs and homes lost to foreclosures."

I believe now that all the personalities got their way and had 2 recall elections now would be time to move on. I think new chairman should begin by listening. There is a lot of discontent and listening would be a good start.
