Delavan-Darien School District prepares for 2010-11 school year
The Delavan-Darien School Board made preparations for the coming school year Monday night with three new policies, a revised high school hand book and several staff and service contracts.

The policies included a new bullying policy that is required to be in place by Aug. 15 under state legislation. Clear expectations and consequences are laid out in the plan, which was approved after its second reading was waived to allow time to have it included in school handbooks.

The board also approved a revised Acceptable Use and Internet Safety Policy and a revised Harassment Policy that added the word "color" where it had been lacking.

Principal Mark Schmitt outlined the main changes to the Delavan-Darien High School handbook. The book is now called the Student-Parent Handbook to reflect the importance of parent involvement and understanding of school policies and procedures.

A new student schedule without a daily homeroom is listed in the handbook. Grade reporting will use a four quarter calendar instead of the six-week grading period of previous years. Guidelines for the new "freshman study hall" and the "Comet Code" for dealing with behavioral issues were added.

Teachers Laura Becker and Annette Wampfler explained the new "Comet Code." The program is a national initiative based on the Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports model. It is meant to improve a sense of community and connection between the students and school and clearly outline expectations within the school.

They said the program will be visible throughout the school, not just listed in the handbook and forgotten. Positive reinforcement for appropriate behavior is part of the program as is a structured flowchart for how teachers and administrators should deal with inappropriate behavior. The program is data driven and should allow administrators to better assess student behaviors.

"We should be able to identify patterns early and address them," Schmitt said.

The three main behavior expectations are clearly defined as "be respectful, be responsible, and be safe." The program will be a school-wide discipline program and will focus on teaching behavioral expectations. Appropriate behaviors will be acknowledged and "behavior errors" will be corrected proactively.

The board also approved bread, milk and garbage contracts for the coming school year without any changes and approved breakfast and lunch prices with no increases.
